VOLUNTEERS REBUILDING TEEN CENTER HALFPIPE

A new and enhanced indoor skateboarding ramp is being built at the Teen Center in Forks.
About 20 young local skateboarders, a father, and visiting skateboarders have been working on the rebuilt ramp for about two weeks. The enlarged ramp – known as a halfpipe after the concrete drainage pipes skateboarders began riding in the 1970s –  is expected to soon be open for skateboarding.

Linda Middleton of Concerned Citizens’ Sunshine and Rainbows organization that runs the Teen Center located across Forks Avenue from Forks Outfitters, provided the opportunity for rebuilding the existing skateboard ramp. The organization provided the volunteers with a $1,000 grant for materials.

Darren Greeno, co-owner of the West End Surf shop on Division Street in Forks, said in addition, 2x4s  were donated by Allen Logging, discounted plywood and building supplies came from Moody’s Nursery and Angeles Millworks, and extra wood was given by the Middleton’s. “Without all of which the project could not have happened,” Greeno said.
Donations of cash were also made at the West End Surf shop by local residents and visitors to Forks.
The new  ramp  is designed to be 32-feet wide, and includes multiple obstacles, such as a roll-in, channels, and vert extensions, Greeno said.

“Dawn Tyson (who operates the teen center) was an amazing help,” he added.
“All the kids (and the few adults) who skateboard in Forks would like to thank the Middleton’s, Dick and Cheryl Moody, and

Allen Logging for their generosity,” Greeno said. “Because of you we have a beautiful new ramp and a dry place to skate when the rain is coming down.”

The City of Forks is working on an outdoor skateboard park, to be built at Tillicum Park.
