Volunteers needed to help salmon

Volunteers are needed for a collaborative project between the Makah Tribe, and Olympic National Park to remove vegetation along the shoreline at Lake Ozette-Olsen’s Beach to improve the habitat for sockeye salmon. Removing the vegetation will allow water to flush through the gravel where sockeye spawn so that their eggs get enough oxygen to survive. Currently, vegetation is holding silt in place which reduces the ability of water to wash through the gravel and provide oxygen.

Volunteers are needed on July 6, 7, and 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.and will meet at the boat launch by the Ranger Station. Organizers will ferry volunteers across to Olsen’s Beach where work will be done.

Bring work gloves, hand tools used for weeding, water or other drinks for the day, lunch, and snacks. If you have a boat and are willing to bring it to help ferry volunteers that would be appreciated as well. Boater’s insurance to ferry any of the other volunteers will be required.

Lake Ozette sockeye salmon are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Rapid decline in their population has occurred since the 1950s.
