Forks Teen Center dance Wednesday
Forks Teen Center will have a dance featuring a live hip hop act from Yakima from 6-11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14.
A $5 cover charge includes admission, popcorn, chips, soda and a CD.

Day care carnival set for next week
Concerned Citizens will again hold its annual carnival next week at Sunshine and Rainbows Day Care.
Games, treats, even rockets will be on tap from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. next Tuesday-Wednesday, Aug. 13-14.
Sherry Larson with Concerned Citizens said the carnival is set to include face painting, an appearance by the Coast Guard, Smokey the Bear and a wide range of games for the day care’s fourth annual fun day.
Local rocketeer John Preston also is slated to stage a rocket demonstration.
There is no price for admission, but tickets for games and treats are 25 cents apiece.
Jefferson County picnic is Aug. 18
West Jefferson County residents are invited to attend the All County Picnic Sunday, Aug. 18. The picnic will be in HJ Carroll Park, 9884 Highway 19, Chimacum, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
The picnic will feature discussion on preparing neighborhoods for major emergencies or disasters.
In addition to the discussion, the picnic will feature live music, games for children, sports games, a farmers market and craft fair, inspirational speakers, a DJ dance party and a bike parade.

Musicians sought for police concert
Musicians are sought to perform a free concert for the Forks Police Foundation at the Roundhouse at 110, 100 La Push Road, during a Stephenie Meyers Days concert Friday, Sept. 13.
The event will run from noon to midnight.
Solo musicians and bands will perform two-hour sets.

Road closure to begin on Forest Service Road 2900
Forest Service Road 2900, located east of Forks on the Pacific Ranger District, will be closed for approximately three weeks beginning Monday, Aug. 12.
The purpose of this closure will be to install a new pipe culvert at milepost 9.2.
The new culvert is larger than the existing one and is intended to meet stream flow standards and improve road safety, the Forest Service said in a release.

Tickets on sale for Sarge’s Place fundraiser
Advance tickets are on sale for the “Rock the Roundhouse” benefit concert to benefit Sarge’s Place, a transitional housing facility in Forks for veterans.
The party will be from 6 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Aug. 24, at The Roundhouse, 110 La Push Road in Forks.
Advance tickets for are $20 and can be purchased at Chinook Pharmacy at
11 S. Forks Ave. Tickets are $25 at the door.

Local bands and groups from as far away as Sacramento, Calif., will perform, said Cheri Tinker, director of Sarge’s Place.
Musical groups include the local alternative band The No Nonsense Buffer from Forks, indie band Estafets from Sequim, Seattle electronica band Audio Numeric and punk band Twitch Angry from Sacramento.
Sarge’s Place is a transitional housing project providing therapeutic care, social service referrals and connections to health care for honorably discharged veterans on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Pressure cooking testing and plant clinic Saturday
Dianna Wiklund, Jefferson County Food Safety/Preservation specialist, will test pressure cooker gauges and answer questions about canning and preserving vegetables at Forks Outfitters/Ace Hardware this Saturday, Aug. 10, from noon-3 p.m.
Wiklund also will answer questions about jellies, jams and canning with answers based on research by Washington State University. She also will provide recipes from WSU and the USDA.
Also at the Outfitters on Saturday, Clallam County Master Gardeners will provide a free plant clinic from noon-3 p.m.
The clinic is free and open to all non-commercial gardeners who need assistance in plant identification, advice on sick plants and treatment options and other general plant questions.
If you have a plant that is diseased or you need identification, bring a large sample of the plant.
Seabird spotter
training Saturday
The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team or COASST will hold a training session for beach walkers and birders interesting in monitoring avian activity Saturday, Aug. 10.
The training will be held at the state Department of Natural Resources Olympic Region office, 411 Tillicum Lane, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Volunteers record data on marine bird carcasses found on beaches monthly in an effort to determine bird mortality patterns on area beaches.
COASST is a citizen science project of the University of Washington in partnership with state, tribal and federal agencies; environmental organization; and community groups.

West End field day set for forest owners
For the first time in more than a decade, the Olympic Peninsula’s Forest Field Day will be held on the West End.
The field day will be held from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the University of Washington Olympic Natural Resources Center in Forks.
The field day is designed to prepare landowners to plan and execute management activities that meet their personal objectives, reduce risks and protect their financial investment. Absentee landowners with property on the peninsula are especially encouraged to attend.
Participants can choose from a wide variety of classes and activities taught by specialists in forest health, wildlife habitat, weed control, wildfire protection, timber and non-timber forest products, using global positioning systems, chainsaw safety and maintenance, forestland security and safety, and more. Presenters will be available to answer questions specific to your property situation. Youth activities will be available all day.
“These classes will be particularly helpful for the small forest owner who otherwise is not a forester,” noted Ellen Matheny, ONRC director of Education and Outreach.
The fee for those who register by Friday, Aug. 19, is $20 per person or $30 for a family of two or more. After that date the fee is $30 per person or $40 per family. An optional barbecue lunch will be available for $10 per person. Lunch reservations must be received by Aug. 19.
WSU Extension, UW Olympic Natural Resources Center, the DNR Forest Stewardship Program, and the Family Forest Foundation are the primary sponsors of the field day.
Educators can earn up to six clock hours of continuing education credits for participating.

Pre-register art for fair
Art entries for this year’s Clallam County Fair can now be pre-registered online, Sequim Arts announced this week.
Artists can enter their work online at www.sequimarts.org. Tags will be printed and waiting for artists when they drop off their artwork.
Sequim Arts, in charge of the fair’s Art Barn, encourages artists of all ages to enter work in the fair.
Entry forms also are available in the Clallam County Fair Exhibitors Guide. Fill out forms and mail them to Sequim Arts, Clallam County Fair Entry, P.O. Box 1842, Sequim, WA 98382 to speed up the entry process.
