FORKS —Forks weathered the elements, scoring four first-half goals on the way to earning the Spartans first boys soccer win of the season in a 5-0 shutout of Ilwaco on Wednesday.

“It was a very windy and wet game but we were able to make the most out of it,” coach Ismael Ramos said. “We definitely had to keep the ball on the ground and out of the air if we wanted to do anything and we were able to put together a lot of passes and build up play.”

Forks’ DeAnthony Davila put the Spartans on the board with a header goal off a set piece in the fourth minute.

Davila headed in the corner kick sent in by Jesus Dominguez for a 1-0 lead.

Luis Ornelas added to the score when he won a free ball and turned and shot on goal in the 25th minute.

Darinel Garcia gauged the wind correctly for a 37th minute goal.

“He shot it from pretty far out about 25 yards,” Ramos said. “He saw that they have a shorter goalkeeper and he went for the upper corner against him and was on target.”

Garcia assisted on a Dominguez goal a minute later as Forks went up 4-0 at halftime.

Forks notched the final goal early in the second half on an Ilwaco own goal.

“Defensively, I would say DeAnthony and Brody Owen were doing well back there,” Ramos said.

He’s hoping the Spartans are able to gain some confidence from the first victory.

“We have had a lot of close games, we’ve played teams tough and come out a bit disheartened at times but there’s been a lot of growth. We have been playing really good soccer and it’s been about getting the kids to believe that we are capable.”
