Grilling for Good: Forks Elks Lodge Hosts BBQ Cook-Off to Support Children’s Therapy

On Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, the smoky aroma of barbecued pork ribs will fill the air as the Forks Elks Lodge, 941 Merchant Rd., fires up its grills for a special cause. The event, titled Cookin’ for the Cause, is more than just a membership drive—it’s a BBQ competition with heart. All net proceeds from the rib cook-off will be donated to the Washington State Elks Therapy Program, a nonprofit that provides crucial home-based therapy services for children with developmental delays and physical disabilities.

The Elks Lodge invites the community to join in this savory celebration of food and generosity, as local “grillers” face off to prove who has the best ribs in town. Once the competition concludes, attendees will be treated to the fruits of the competitors’ labor, enjoying a delicious BBQ meal for a good cause. Judging starts at 3 p.m. with food service at 4 p.m. – $15 per plate.

For years, the Washington State Elks Therapy Program has offered a lifeline to families across the state, providing home-based occupational and physical therapy at no cost. The program uses a strength-based approach, focusing on what children can achieve rather than on their limitations. Parents are closely involved in the therapy process, with therapists providing intervention directly in the child’s home.

The impact of the program is far-reaching. Each therapy unit, which consists of a licensed therapist and essential equipment, serves an average of 25 children. These units are strategically located across Washington State, ensuring that children in need, regardless of location, have access to life-changing therapy. An impressive 86% of all donations to the program go directly to providing therapy services, with minimal administrative costs
