This week in 1999 Diane Schostak was featured in a front-page photo as she had been crowned the Millenium Queen of Tourism at the Forks Chamber’s Wine and Cheese event (photo). The paper was filled with letters of outrage and photos of protestors, very upset about the city police department and animal shelter euthanizing puppies and other animals being held at the City Shelter. The 5th Annual SIORF Festival of Trees was approaching; the theme was “Christmas Fantasy.” After a recount, Steve Tharinger was declared County Commissioner over Martha Ireland by 79 votes. A Holiday Carnaval had been held at LTC. Artquest, organized by Missy Seymour, at the RAC, drew a huge number of children, where all types of art were taught (photo).

Fifty years ago this week it was reported that two policemen from Tokyo Japan had visited Forks and were spending three months in the US (Seattle) to observe Law Enforcement techniques. Dr. Karl Holmquist was offering chiropractic services at his office on Bogachiel Way. In city council activity Frank Lyda had reported that someone had stolen an entire “Radar Controlled 25 MPH” sign. It was also noted, by Councilmember Chilson, that the big log was moving, and would now be located at the Triangle Lot on Sol Duc Way.

This week in 1952 a front-page story shared that the Federal Government had denied any responsibility for the disastrous Forks Fire of September 1951, and asked for a judgment of $1,625,528 in damages against Port Angeles and Western Railroad. The American Legion had held an Armistice Day Event with speakers and a dinner. Mrs. Jack James and Mrs. Don Sands had entertained singing a medley of WWI favorites.
