The Quileute Tribe is pleased to announce that the Quileute Tsunami Protection Legislation S636, passed the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on Thursday, July 28.

Quileute Chairwoman Bonita Cleveland states, "There have been three minor earthquakes in our area in the last 5 days. The Olympic Peninsula, Carnation and Bellingham have all experienced minor quakes and we can not take this activity likely. Mother Earth is communicating with us and we should heed her warnings as a message  that we must act now to move our people to safety. My heart has been heavy with concern for my people, but today their is a ray of hope on the horizon. We are so grateful to Sen. Cantwell and the committee for their recognition of the importance of moving the Quileute lower village to higher ground. We will continue to work with the Senator and Rep. Norm Dicks, to move this legislation forward, so we can ensure the safety and protection of our village for generations to come.  I humbly lift my hands and heart today to the Creator for answering our prayers."

Quileute tribal council Secretary Carol Hatch shared, "I am honored to be able to represent our people on this historic day."

The tribe received social media support today from Twilight actor, Gil Birmingham, who portrays Billy Black, Jacob Black’s dad in the movies. Gil tweeted and facebooked support of the tribe and asked his fans to support the Quileute’s efforts to move to higher ground by signing the petition. Gil visited La Push as the special guest at last years Quileute days celebration where he was honored with a flag of the nation.
