The Coast Guard is searching for a fisherman reported in the water off the Quileute Marina-based 43-foot fishing vessel Maverick, which went down overnight following a collision with the 90-foot fishing vessel Viking Storm. Three of the four crewmembers of the Maverick were rescued by the crew of the Viking Storm. The three men were transferred to the Coast Guard cutter Alert and are in stable condition.

Also taking part in the search are the crew of a 110-foot patrol boat Cutter Chandeleur based in Ketchikan, Alaska, an MH-65C helicopter crew from the Coast Guard’s Air Station Port Angeles, and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Quillayute River.

An early morning report had the incident located some 30 miles off LaPush. 

The Maverick crew was reportedly out fishing for a over a day prior to the emergency. 

In November 2003, the Maverick’s crew were ordered to port at Neah Bay after an offshore Coast Guard check made by the crew of the Cutter Cuttyhunk found numerous safety violations aboard. 

The fishing boat’s master, Darby Dickerson, of Port Angeles, was cited.

 "The most significant of these violations were having no emergency survival raft, expired flares, a non-working restroom holding tank, and excessive oil in the bilge," the Coast Guard report stated. "The Cuttyhunk ordered the fishing vessel to the nearest port of Neah Bay to correct their violations before returning to sea."
