It was a productive fishing day for 53 young anglers, ages 5-14, who fished in the Annual Kids Salmon Derby, sponsored by the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Lions Club. Fishing for clipped coho and pink salmon, 44 youths brought in fish and chose from an array of prizes donated by families and businesses, according to Nancy Messmer, spokesman for the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Lions Club.

Kinney, age 12, of Port Orchard, with a coho weighing 8.23 pounds. Christoper Evans, age 13, last year’s first-place winner from Lacey, was a close second this year with a 8.20 pound coho. Winning third place was 6-year-old Gabe Barros, of Clallam Bay with a 8.08 pound coho.

Rounding out the top 10 award winners were Nora Parker (9) Clallam Bay, Nick Young (14) Clallam Bay, Josef Babbitt (12) Bonney Lake, Dyxsan Martin (5) Maple Valley, Devan Martin (11) Maple Valley, Kalin Duncan (11) Clallam Bay and Madison Evans (8) Lacey.

Young fishermen came from all over Washington, Messmer said, as near as Sekiu and Clallam Bay and as far as Ellensburg, Prosser and Richland. Traveling the most distance was an Arizona angler.

Winners of the first several places won cash prizes and all participants chose a prize, according to their rank on the fish ladder.

Sekiu resorts Van Ripers, Straitside and Olson’s, Weel Road Deli and Forks Outfitters donated $100 each.

Co-chairmen Adam Campbell and Roy Morris of the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Lions gave credit to the many donors who made the free annual derby possible, including Troy and Monica Berger, Lyle Sparks, Bob Wall of Compass Rose, Curley’s Resort, Clallam Bay Rummage Store, Jerry’s Small Engines Sales and Service, JT’s Sweet Stuffs, Dan Anderson Photography, West End Motors, Forks City Hardware True Value, Chinook Pharmacy, Native to Twilight, Swain’s General Store, Agnew Grocery, Brandon Morrissey Floors, Laurel Lanes, Sunset Wire and Rope, Adam and Janet Campbell and family, Port Angeles Safeway and Albertson’s.

Beyond his annual $100 donation, Chris Mohr donated fishing lures to the anglers who registered at Van Ripers Resort.
