Check out RainCon this weekend

It came from beyond the forest … but, what is it? It is RainCon! Think games, comics, cosplay, geek tutorials, a chance to have a great weekend and do it here in Forks. Organizer Evan Sveum, owner Home Slice Pizza, is hoping you will come share games, your geek expertise and have a great time.

Yes, it’s Father’s Day — but what a great way to spend time with dad, tossing dice, sharing some pizza, having some laughs …plan to be a part, everyone is welcome! Come and check it out. Everything happens at the Rainforest Arts Center, 35 N. Forks Ave.

There will be comics, costumes, and creative arts at this new festival here in Forks. About 20 vendors will have booths from local comic shops, PNW-made comics, local art and loads more! There will be a costume contest, table top games, and a catapult making contest. Admission for all three days is FREE.

Friday evening featured

presentation

On Friday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m., Mr. Patrick Lowinger will present “Exploring the Roman Frontier: My Summer at Halmyris.”

Lowinger is a historian and free-lance writer with a master’s degree in ancient history from the American Military University. He is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in Archaeology from the University of Leicester.

His primary area of focus is the ancient Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age through the Early Medieval Periods. He is an active member of the Association of Ancient Historians. He remains academically engaged by spending his summers in Romania doing archaeological field work.

Lowinger will be discussing the history of Halmyris as well as his current program which he hopes to uncover more of the Roman Empire’s ancient past.

More than 1,000 years of history marks Halmyris, where multiple civilizations once ruled the point where the Danube River poured into the Black Sea. Halmyris was one of the most important military, civilian, economic and religious centers in the region throughout antiquity. Today Halmyris sits in the oasis of natural beauty that is the Danube Delta, a site of local tourism, religious pilgrimage, and archaeological exploration. The area has been under excavation since 1981.
