Veteran Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt will provide suggestions for sustainable alternatives to turfgrass lawns on Thursday, Sept. 13, at noon in the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Nesbitt will discuss the ecological impact of traditional lawns on water use, habitat and pollution. She will present several different plants that can be used as lawn alternatives in a variety of landscapes.

Nesbitt, who earned a PhD in genetics from the University of Washington, retired from teaching biology at the University of California San Diego. She directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009 to 2012. She is a frequent speaker on sustainable growing and instructor for the Master Gardener intern training.

The presentation on home gardens as wildlife habitiat, by Anita McMillan, originally scheduled for September 13, has been rescheduled for October 25.

The Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips education series continues on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Presentations occur from noon to 1 p.m. and are free and open to the public. For questions, call 360-565-2679.
