FEMA training coming
to Clallam Bay
There will be a Community Emergency Response Training series available in Clallam Bay on Feb. 16, 23, and 24. This free FEMA training for community members, businesses, medical facilities and schools will be held at the Clallam County Fire District #5 Station on Eagles Way in Clallam Bay.
The training will provide individuals with a practical knowledge based on disaster preparedness, fire suppression and hazardous materials safety, terrorism, disaster psychology, how to organize response teams for your community, search and rescue skills, and medical operations for first on scene citizens in emergencies and disasters.
The series will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each on Feb. 16 and 23 with a practicum on Feb. 24 that starts at 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Please email or call Jamye Wisecup at jwisecup@co.clallam.wa.us, or 360-417-2525.
Free Dance Lessons!
Rainforest Council for the Arts will be sponsoring dance lessons Feb. 22, and March 8 and 22. The lessons are held at Forks Congregational Church’s Fellowship Hall. Dancing begins at 7 p.m. and the lessons are free. No partner is necessary, and beginners are always welcome. Please join us.
Fun A Day/Month of
Creativity Showcase
A month of creativity has ended and it is time to show off what was created. Drop by the library on Saturday, Feb. 16 between noon and 3 p.m., to see all the different things people did with their time in January. There will be a wide range of things that are handmade along with activities that people engaged in and documented.
There are always surprises. Come see and be inspired to join in next year. One busy fellow did something different each day and has a photographic record to prove it! Everyone is welcome to come for fun and treats.

Christian Breakfast
This Months Men’s Nondenominational Fellowship Breakfast will be held at Forks Congregational Church, 280 S. Spartan Ave., this Saturday, Feb. 16 at 8 a.m. This month’s topic is “What does it mean to Fast during the Lenten Season.” Pastor Warren Johnson, with assistance from others, will be providing the breakfast of biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs coffee/juice. Breakfast is by donation. The Reading and Prayer for Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. sharp.

Book Wars- Final Competition rescheduled
Seventh and eighth-grade teams from Sequim Middle School, Stevens Middle School, Crescent School, Olympic Peninsula Academy and Forks Junior High School will compete in a literary trivia competition at the Port Angeles Main Library of the North Olympic Library System. Due to weather conditions, the county-wide Book Wars Final Competition originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8, has been rescheduled to Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m., at the Port Angeles Main Library.
Throughout the school year, students have read twelve books and competed in semi-final elimination rounds to prepare for this culminating event. Victorious team members at the final battle will each win a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.
Books included in the competition include: “Ghost” by Jason Reynolds, “Sparrow” by Sarah Moon, “Jazz Owls” by Margarita Engle, “George Washington’s Secret Six” by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yeager, “Frogkisser!” by Garth Nix, “I Will Always Write Back” by Cailin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda, “Leviathan” by Scott Westerfeld, “Piecing Me Together” by Renée Watson, “Refugee” by Alan Gratz, “Skeleton Creek” by Patrick Carman, “Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection” by Matt Dembicki, and “Warcross” by Marie Lu.
The public is welcome to attend this fun community event. Book Wars is a joint program between local middle schools throughout the county and the North Olympic Library System. Funding for this program has been generously provided by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library, the Friends of Sequim Library, Friends of the Forks Library and Sequim Middle School.

PC FOUNDATION OFFERS $10K IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO NEW BAS STUDENTS
The Peninsula College Foundation has recently granted $10,000 to be awarded to new students enrolling in Peninsula College’s Bachelor of Applied Management Program spring quarter 2019.
In order to be eligible to receive up to $1,000 towards tuition in the BAS Program, students must meet all eligibility criteria and program prerequisites, apply and be admitted to the BAS program, and enroll in BAS courses spring quarter 2019.
Funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and may not be used to supplant other sources of tuition-based aid; this scholarship may be awarded in addition to other financial aid funds, such as Pell or State Need Grant.

Emergency Prep
Work Group Meeting rescheduled
The West Jefferson Emergency Preparedness Work Group planned for Saturday, Feb. 9 has been rescheduled to Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Clearwater School in Clearwater from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
The school is located at milepost 146 on US Highway 101. As usual, the meeting will be in conjunction with the Quinault Radio Club. John Crooks will be bringing “Map Your Neighborhood” handbooks. Everyone is welcome.
Seed Starting
WSU Master Gardener Cindy Ericksen share tips for starting seeds, both indoors and outdoors, on Thursday, Feb. 14, at noon in the county commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Ericksen will discuss selecting seeds that will fit a gardener’s taste preferences, microclimate and growing conditions. She will also explain timing, watering, temperature and nutrition needs for optimal germination and how to care for, transplant and tend new seedlings.
A nurse by profession, Ericksen brings years of gardening experience. She has contributed thousands of plants, particularly, healthy vegetable starts, for the annual Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County’s plant sale since becoming a Master Gardener in 2006.
This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles. Programs are designed to help home gardeners establish or improve their gardening practices. Speakers are local and regional individuals with expertise and experience in sustainable horticultural practices.
Attendees may bring a lunch. The presentations are free and open to the public.

FREE TAX PREPARATION!
IRS-certified volunteers will provide free tax preparation and e-filing for low-and-middle-income taxpayers of all ages at Forks city hall Council Chambers, 500 East Division Street.
Volunteers will be available every-other-Saturday, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Feb. 16, March 2, 16 and 30, and April 13.

Monday Musicale
Port Angeles Monday Musicale will meet Monday, Feb. 18. There will be a free concert at 1 p.m., featuring Steve Card from Wildcard Guitars.
Steve builds guitars and will give a brief talk and play his guitar for those attending. He is a retired music major and this should be an interesting show.
Monday Musicale meets the third Monday of the month and proceeds from memberships are used for scholarships for local high school seniors.

Learn about Electromagnetic Radiation
‘Save the Olympic Peninsula’ will sponsor a program on Electromagnetic Radiation, the basic science behind it and its applications in our daily lives, on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Carver Room, Port Angeles Library, 2210 Peabody St. The program will feature Paul Kolesnikoff and Tony Corrado.
Kolesnikoff has a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and has been involved with the design and construction of antennas and Radar Cross Section test facilities. He has also authored 12 technical papers.
Corrado has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and has 40 years of experience related to defense-related weapons, sensors and technology development. He also, among other things, was a manager for Raytheon’s US Army Active Radio Frequency Identification Devices program and was appointed to NATO’s Smart Munitions panel.
