Skye Hestand, 7th grade, approached me this fall wanting to do something about bullying. She read a news story in her ELA class about a 9th-grade boy who got bullied for wearing pink. Skye summarized, “Two seniors were disturbed by it (the bullying) so they went out to buy a bunch of pink T-shirts to hand out at school, and by the end of the week most of the students were wearing pink.”

Martin Luther King Jr. day is nationally recognized as a “Day of Service”. Forks Middle School is asking students and families in the community to wear pink on Friday, Jan. 15 to make a statement against bullying and to honor Martin Luther King Jr for his message of equity and justice. Ms. Hestand’s sense of activism to make a difference aligns with our goal to make school a safe and inclusive environment for all. We will have paper pink hearts available at FMS for students who don’t have anything pink to wear.
