Music Scholarships

Monday Musicale Scholarships are available for high school seniors attending public, private, or home schools who wish to further their musical education. Applications are available from high school scholarship counselors, music teachers, or by contacting Gail McDonald at 360-477-8601, gailspianokeys@gmail.com. This organization has funded students for over 50 years with combined awards of approximately $6,000 per year. The application deadline is March 29.

Together We Read: Love Lettering

North Olympic Library System (NOLS) patrons can join thousands of readers around the world during Together We Read, a free digital bookclub from OverDrive. From Feb. 10-24, readers can enjoy Kate Clayborn’s witty romance novel Love Lettering, as an eBook and eAudiobook with no waitlists or holds. In Love Lettering, Meg Mackworth’s hand-lettering skill has made her famous by designing custom journals for her New York City clientele. She has another skill, too: reading signs that other people miss. Knowing the upcoming marriage of Reid Sutherland and his polished fiancée was doomed to fail is one thing, but weaving a secret word of warning into their wedding program is another. A year later, Reid has tracked Meg down to find out how she knew that his meticulously planned future was about to implode. As they gradually open up to each other, both try to ignore a deepening connection between them. But the signs are there—irresistible, indisputable, urging Meg to heed the messages Reid is sending her, before it’s too late.

The Together We Read book club connects readers through U.S. public libraries with the same eBook for two weeks and only requires a NOLS library card to get started. This free program is facilitated by OverDrive.

Youth in 4-H, FFA or open class exhibitions are invited to join us for an exciting virtual youth market livestock field day series

The University of Idaho Extension, Nez Perce county in partnership with the Washington State University Whitman and Asotin counties have hosted a popular and informative youth market livestock field day in the Lewis-Clark Valley for many years. In 2020 these events were canceled due to COVID-19, and in 2021 they will be delivered virtually using Zoom, making it possible for us to invite more participants than ever to join in the fun and learning!

Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. PST for Market Beef (March 20), Market Swine (March 27), Market Sheep (April 3) and Market Goat (April 10).

There is a fee of $5 per registration per session to help pay for some of the associated costs of producing this event.

“Food Gardens in Uncertain Economic Times” by Bob Cain, Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021

In today’s economy, there is much attention toward home gardens as a strategy to enhance household food security and nutrition. Master Gardener Bob Cain, a frequent contributor to the “Green Thumb Garden Tips Education Series” will discuss food insecurity during these uncertain times via Zoom, Thursday, Feb, 25 from noon to 1 p.m.

Cain will address the economic and social criteria that help gardeners determine what to grow for the biggest impact on the family food budget and the family’s participation in an edible garden project. He will provide instructions on setting up a small to medium-sized food garden, talk about space considerations, set-up and ongoing costs, and garden maintenance. Cain also will cover the topics of victory style gardens and seed saving during his hour-long presentation.

Bob Cain has more than 40 years of gardening experience in Scotland, Ireland, Colorado, and Washington. He writes a monthly article for Between the Vines, the Clallam County Master Gardener newsletter, on vegetable growing as well as articles on plant disease and pests. He is a frequent contributor to local newspaper gardening columns and local radio gardening programs. Cain is the 2009 Master Gardener Intern of the Year, 2011 Master Gardener of the year and has attained Lifetime Achievement status for continued service to Clallam County Master Gardeners. He served as Manager of the Woodcock Demonstration Garden for seven years and is a past President of the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County.

The “Green Thumb Garden Tips” education series is sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners. Presentations via Zoom are available from noon to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday, February through October. November through January, one lecture is offered. College to Host Three Virtual Running Start Info Nights Beginning Feb. 24

Peninsula College will host three, virtual Running Start Information Nights via Zoom, at 6 p.m., Feb. 24, March 11, and April 14.

The events are designed to provide prospective Running Start students and their parents with an opportunity to learn more about the program and how high school juniors and seniors can earn college credit, tuition-free. They will also learn about strategies for success and what parents and families can do to be supportive.

Meet Author Roshani Chokshi

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) invites you to meet award-winning author Roshani Chokshi, on Wednesday, March 3 at 12 p.m. through Zoom for a conversation about her career. Learn about her writing process and how she became an author. Chokshi wrote Aru Shah and the End of Time, one of five selected titles for NOLS Battle of the Books program.

Roshani Chokshi is the author of the New York Times best-selling first book in the Pandava series, Aru Shah and the End of Time, and its sequels, Aru Shah and the Song of Death and Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes. She also wrote New York Times best-selling Young Adult books, The Star-Touched Queen, The Gilded Wolves, and The Silvered Serpents. Aru Shah and the End of Time was recently optioned for film by Paramount Pictures.

An annual tradition since 2013, Battle of the Books is designed to encourage reading, expose kids to a wide range of genres, inspire teamwork, and to help students build a home library. “Battle of the Books is one of our favorite programs at the library,” said Jennifer Knight, Youth Services Librarian. “We love connecting with fourth graders from throughout the county, discussing the books, and helping spark an interest in reading. We love working with the schools, kids and families.” She adds, “Although this year is a bit different, we’re excited to still offer the program virtually, and to encourage kids to pick up some of these great titles.”
