“Rare Fruits for Cold Winter Areas”

Tom Del Hotal, a Certified Arborist, member of the International Plant Propagators Society, and California Rare Fruit Growers, will teach gardeners how to take advantage of Clallam County’s unique microclimates to grow a wide variety of fruiting plants from many areas of the world, during his hour-long Zoom presentation on Thursday, Oct. 14, beginning at noon. Attendees will also learn about Tom’s own one-acre property which grew over 58 types of fruit with more than 200 varieties of fruiting trees and shrubs.

Tom has a B.A. in biology as a park ranger naturalist and holds a teaching degree in horticulture. He was a part-time horticulture instructor for more than 20 years. Tom served on the local chapter boards of many horticultural organizations, taught classes for the San Diego Master Gardener Association, and gave presentations to many gardening groups and organizations throughout his career. He became a Clallam County Master Gardener in 2021.
A nurseryman since 1977, Tom has been devoted to the discovery, development, and expansion of fruit varieties for both home growers and commercial development. He owned Fantasia Gardens, a consulting and pruning business that offered home and small-scale orchard design and management services from 1983-2020, and a specialty wholesale/retail nursery for 14 years. Tom currently works part-time in the garden department at the Sequim Home Depot.
The “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Adult volleyball league
Plans are still in the works to hold the adult coed volleyball league, formerly run by the City of Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department, at Peninsula College this fall.
Currently, five teams are signed up to compete in the B Division on Monday evenings and only two for the A Division on Thursdays, which will be canceled if more teams don’t register. The cost is $45 per player and team captains can secure their spot by contacting Rick Ross at Peninsula College at rross@pencol.edu.
Individuals wanting to get on a team are invited to attend the open gyms on Monday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. and/or Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. League play starts on Oct. 18.
The league will be following the state guidelines for indoor recreation sports whereby masks are required for all participants.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day Poetry Slam
The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day this year by hosting a virtual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Poetry Slam to celebrate the creativity and survivance of local Indigenous voices. The Slam will be presented on Zoom and NOLS’ Facebook Live on Monday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. Visit nols.org or call the Library for the Zoom information; Zoom has call-in capabilities so you may listen in without internet.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day is recognized on the second Monday in October, to honor the past, present, and future of Native Americans in the United States. NOLS has partnered with a local Indigenous poets group who selected the presenters for this program. The Indigenous Peoples’ Day Poetry Slam is recommended for viewers age thirteen and older. Parental discretion is advised. The event will also be available live on the NOLS Facebook page and a recording of the event will be available on NOLS social media platforms.

Virtual Free Legal Clinic
On Saturday, Oct. 23, Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers will present a virtual legal aid clinic, a free program offering legal advice for members of the public.
Consultations will be offered via telephone or Zoom.
We are offering 3 types of service for this event:
1.) In partnership with the Clallam Public Defender’s Office, there will be consultations available for people who have been impacted by the Blake Decision regarding possession of controlled substance convictions.
2.) Public defense lawyers and volunteer attorneys will assist individuals with applying for relief from legal financial obligations for Clallam County criminal convictions of all types.
3.) Attorneys will be available for consultations for civil law matters (family, landlord/tenant, estate planning, etc.).
Legal aid clinics are geared to help those who are financially unable to otherwise access a lawyer. Attorney volunteers will be available from 10 a.m. to noon, to answer legal questions, direct people to local services that might be able to assist them and to explain the legal process to them.
