Film Highlighting Indigenous Voices in the Struggle with Climate Change to Be Screened at Peninsula College
Port Angeles, WA – October 12-14, through Zoom, Magic of Cinema, Studium Generale, and ʔaʔk̓ʷustəƞáwt̓xʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse, will screen Island Road, a film that confronts the reality of the global climate emergency with powerful and personal stories.
The movie centers around an Indigenous community in southern Louisiana where the climate crisis is urgent, and individuals are being displaced from their homes. As the film’s website states, the Isle de Jean Charles Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Tribe “has resided on the Isle de Jean Charles for seven or eight generations, since the Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced them from their ancestral home. However due to coastal erosion, the Isle de Jean Charles has been disappearing … Dredging of canals in the Gulf of Mexico by oil companies, levee engineering in the Mississippi Delta, rising sea levels, and more frequent and powerful hurricanes precipitated by climate change are the leading causes of this transformation.”
Through intimate and quiet interviews, the stories and voices of Tribal members are highlighted; interviewees describe their relationship to the disappearing land, their concerns around food sources, and their families’ and communities’ histories, current struggles and joys, and uncertain futures.
There will be three screenings of the film, which has a runtime of 73 minutes. The events are free and open to the public.

Trail Blaze Bash
“Olympic Discovery Trail Blaze Bash: Twice the Fun in 2021,” the Peninsula Trails Coalition’s annual fundraising event, is slated for 6:45-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, with an online auction set the week prior, Oct. 10-16.
Purchased tickets get participants access to the “Bash” — an event to be live-streamed from the 7 Cedars Hotel — and to the online auction.
Contributors are invited to book a room at the 7 Cedars Hotel the weekend of the virtual event and to ride/run on the nearby Olympic Discovery Trail; the event is live-streamed to each hotel room or to one’s device.

Adult volleyball league
Plans are still in the works to hold the adult coed volleyball league, formerly run by the City of Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department, at Peninsula College this fall.
Currently, five teams are signed up to compete in the B Division on Monday evenings and only two for the A Division on Thursdays, which will be canceled if more teams don’t register.
The cost is $45 per player and team captains can secure their spot by contacting Rick Ross at Peninsula College at rross@pencol.edu.
Individuals wanting to get on a team are invited to attend the open gyms on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. League play starts on Oct. 18.
The league will be following the state guidelines for indoor recreation sports whereby masks are required for all participants.
