Forks VFW to close

It is sad news this Veteran’s Day to learn that the Fletcher -Wittenborn VFW Post 9106 will soon close. VFW member Dave Williams announced the news at last week’s West End Business and Professional Association’s weekly meeting.

Williams said that dwindling membership and few active members are part of the reason for the decision. He also shared that COVID also didn’t help and that the building is also in need of some repairs. The Auxiliary is down to just two members.

The post was formed after WWII and named for Walter Fletcher and Arthur Wittenborn both killed in action during WWII.

Members originally met at the West End Sportsman’s Club until about 1960 when the post got its own home on Spartan Avenue.

Williams said a representative from the VFW will come and take possession of the property and a decision will be made as to how to move forward with the property.

The VFW is the oldest combat veteran service organization, tracing its roots back to 1899. The VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, Guard, and Reserve forces.
