Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Dia de Culturas planning committee, we extend our sincere gratitude to Forks Mayor Tim Fletcher for signing the proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month. Forks is home to a vibrant Hispanic community with roots in Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15, a date that commemorates the independence of several Latin American countries and continues through Oct. 15, culminating in the celebration of Dia de la Raza on October 12.
As stated in the proclamation, “Whereas, our town recognizes the importance of embracing and honoring the Hispanic culture and heritage, fostering inclusivity, understanding, and appreciation among all residents;” and also, “Whereas, we encourage all residents to participate in events and activities that showcase the rich diversity of Hispanic culture, including music, dance, art, cuisine, literature, and history.”
While we celebrate as a united community, we also take pride in the diverse traditions, foods, and music that each culture brings. We invite everyone to join us on Saturday, Sept. 28 for the third annual Dia de Culturas from 4-8 pm at the Peninsula College Forks Extension. Come and experience an evening of vibrant cultural celebration featuring food, music, dance, and games as we honor and enjoy the rich tapestry of our shared heritage.
Gracias,
Dia de Culturas planning committee
