A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 1999 Vance Simons and his ultralight were featured in a front-page photo (photo). In construction news, a new school building was going up on the former location of beloved Spartan Lake! and downtown at the old Texaco Station lot a new True Value building was taking shape. A Makah Museum delegation was traveling to Japan on a cultural exchange trip inspired by the 1832 shipwreck of the Hojun-maru.

Fifty years ago this week the proposed Forks Elks Lodge was getting closer to reality, with many activities being planned. Deer season had opened with high fire danger reported. Rosie Crippen had been appointed as the new La Push Postmaster (photo). Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hillcar had welcomed their son John ….seven pounds five ounces. Dave Bunker and his band were appearing at the Vagabond …providing teen and adult dances (photo).

This week in 1952 a forest fire had burned 14,000 acres in the Rainy Creek/Bear Creek area. It was started by slash-burning activity by the Olympic National Forest. Two hundred men had been on the fire line. Funeral service had been held for commercial fisherman Leslie Gossage who had disappeared off his boat out of La Push. He was last seen near Destruction Island in July and presumed lost at sea.
