A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000 local Professional Pet Sitter Patt Doyle had encouraged Gov. Gary Locke to set aside a Professional Pet Sitters Week; March 5- 11 was chosen. Doyle was donating 10% of her pet sitting fees that week to Friends of Forks Animals (FOFA)(photo). The West End Health Fair had been well attended and FOFA had participated (photo). Roy “Spider” Wright of Sekiu had won 1st prize, $1,000, in the Sekiu Salmon Derby with a 14.59-pound salmon.

Fifty years ago this week in “In the Service” news, Army Pvt. Stephen A. Shaw had been assigned as an Infantryman in the 3rd Armored Division in Germany. In school board news, the Flanagan’s home plans had been selected as the next build for the school carpentry class. In Sunset Lanes Highlights, Harold Early was Bowler of the Week. In police calls a visitor to the area had reported having mud splashed on his windshield by a log truck, he wanted WSP to do something about it. There was a report of four people fighting at a local business; police broke it up with no arrests. The four moved on to fight at another business, and arrests were made.

In 1953 rare photos appeared on the front page of the Forks Forum. It was big news that the new town hall/fire hall was nearing completion (photo). The new town hall was complete enough for the town council to hold the first official meeting there. In a staged photo, council members, the mayor and the town attorney and clerk were photographed sitting on dynamite boxes instead of chairs (photo). The Roller Rink was opening on March 1. In ads, the Olympic Pharmacy was selling “Wonder Capsules.” (I wonder what was in them.)
