PCSC seeks donations and help for 2024 Fish n Brew

The Pacific Coast Salmon Coalition is hosting a Fish N Brew! The event will feature a competition of home-made fish dishes and home brews of every kind: from beer and wine to tea and seltzers. We will have a live auction fundraiser to support PCSC, and end the night with live music from the Richwine Road Band. We plan this to be a fun community event for the whole family, and we would like your help!

Ways you can

contribute:

■ Sponsor the Event. We are soliciting sponsors for the event, for a $200 donation we will feature your logo or name on our website (here: https://www.pacificcoastsalmoncoalition.org/fish-n-brew) and at the Fish N Brew.

■ Donate Items to Auction. We know the West End loves to bid on items at auction! If you are able to donate a gift basket, services or experiences, we would greatly appreciate it.

■ Donate to the Beer Garden. If you own a brewery, winery, or bar we are soliciting donated kegs or bottles to be served at a beer garden during the event. Any sponsors will have their logos featured in marketing materials, our website and at the event.

■ Volunteer! We are offering a free “Fish N Brew” T-shirt to anyone willing to volunteer at the Fish N Brew to help us put on a successful event.

About PCSC

Our purpose is to restore salmon populations in our region, which includes several significant rivers— Sol Duc, Bogachiel, Hoh, Clearwater, and Quinault. These rivers are glacially fed and have short, but steep drops to the ocean, making it ideal salmon rearing habitat. The stewards of this land include private landowners, Olympic National Park, National Forest, Washington State Forest, private timber land, and tribal land. PCSC’s work is diverse and responsive to the needs of our region and our community.

Salmon are a vital component of the culture, economy and health of the West End of the Olympic Peninsula. Correction of human-made fish passage barriers such as impassable culverts, dams, floodgates, or degraded fishways is one of the most cost-effective methods of salmonid enhancement and restoration. In many cases, several miles of quality habitat can be revived by eliminating a single point source fish barrier.

PCSC has experience identifying and executing projects of local importance, managing construction work, and educating the next generation of land stewards to continue this work.

We have three areas of focus:

■ Habitat Restoration – In the summer of 2024, we are restoring three off-channel habitat sites on the West End. We are focused on removing the fish barriers and putting in natural, functional solutions. Our goal is for nature to then naturally maintain the site, with minimal human intervention.

■ Education – PCSC was awarded a “No Child Left Inside Grant” to create a summer school program called Salmon Camp in collaboration with the Quillayute Valley School District. Forks Middle School sixth grade science teacher Kim Kearns initiated and teaches the program with third grade science teacher Katie Haag. For six weeks, thirty 5th and 6th graders learn all about Salmon: their life cycle, their habitat, biology, and challenges they face. We also get kids outside, including multiple field trips and outdoor skills building. Our hope is to have kids engage in environmental stewardship through salmon education and outdoor experiences.

■ Community – We are one solution to a problem that involves many–and we enjoy working together! In February, PCSC hosted a Community Outreach Dinner, where we invited other local salmon organizations to speak about the work they do in the area. PCSC is also working with the North Olympic Land Trust who manage the Elk Creek Conservation Area, the 255-acre park located just outside downtown in Forks. We heard comments from the community that the trail is a well-loved resource, so we helped in organizing two volunteer work parties to help restore the trail, with more to come.

Our state grants are no longer certain funding sources. So, PCSC is shifting focus to private donations and fundraising to ensure our work can continue. We are hosting the Fish N Brew in hopes of creating an event for our community to enjoy and ensure financial stability for PCSC. PCSC is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, and any donation you make will be tax deductible.
