A conversation on Saturday regarding the Upper Hoh Road repair was a powerful example of how government and community collaboration can lead to swift action. Mayor Fletcher and Rod Fleck joined Governor Ferguson, Representative Adam Bernbaum, Senator Chapman, and Representative Tharinger and others, in discussing the urgent need for road repairs. While both the Upper Hoh Road and the Lake Quinault Loop Road repairs were estimated at around $650,000 each, the immediate priority was the Upper Hoh Road, and access to the Hoh Rain Forest.
Governor Ferguson’s team, having worked intensively over the previous 36 hours, presented a funding strategy that relied on the Strategic Reserve, a state fund that necessitates private contributions. The emphasis was on engaging businesses and individuals in the community to help match the state’s funding commitment. Ferguson underscored the importance of all contributions, regardless of size.
The urgency of the situation, a list of pledged donations was needed by Tuesday, prompted immediate community action. By Sunday, the Forks Chamber of Commerce had put out a call for donations, and by Monday’s Jefferson County Commissioners meeting, private contributions appeared to have met the $20,000 threshold needed to leverage the state’s $600,000 commitment. Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour highlighted the remarkable speed at which the funding came together, demonstrating the dedication to infrastructure and accessibility.
With the financial hurdles cleared, the next step will be securing a contract, a process expected to begin within the week. Kevin Killian from Olympic National Park (ONP) reassured meeting attendees that the Hoh Visitor Center was ready to reopen as soon as road repairs were completed, further underscoring the significance of this effort.
This rapid mobilization showcases the power of civic engagement and cooperation. The successful coordination between government officials, community members, and private donors not only ensured that the Upper Hoh Road repair could proceed but also served as a testament to what can be accomplished when everyone works together.
