Clallam County tax revenue figures released this week show the Twilight phenom provided a strong boost for the West End economy in 2010, however a significant drop in visitor arrival numbers gathered by the Forks Chamber of Commerce may signal a waning in the global fad.

State tax tallies show room tax  revenue collected in Forks during 2010 came in at $150,092.36, or a 12.36 percent boost compared to the same count in 2009.

The months of February, May, August, September, October and December showed sizable gains. However, December’s boost may be attributable to an improving national economy allowing more family travel to Forks.

June and November showed drops in accommodation tax revenues, with November dropping from $21,861 in 2009 to $17,721 in 2010.

Visitor arrival numbers announced by the Forks Chamber of Commerce this week show over 73,000 West End visitors were counted in the chamber’s guest book for all of 2010, up from 69,975 in 2009. A casual study of how many visitors arrive at the center, but aren’t counted show a possible one-third boost to those numbers. On the down side, visitor arrivals counted in the guest book were down about 40 percent in November 2010 compared to November 2009, and about 28 percent down in December 2010 compared to December 2009, according to Visitor Information Center Manager Mike Gurling. The November count was 1,749 in November 2010 compared to 2,935 in November 2009, and 1,825 in December 2010 compared to 2,540 in  December 2009.
