The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is hosting the second annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Poetry Reading in celebration of poetry created and performed by Native poets of the Olympic Peninsula.

Gather in person at the House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse on the Port Angeles campus or join live via Zoom on Monday, October 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

An open mic for Native poets will kick off this event, followed by the featured reader for the evening, Sara Marie Ortiz, an Acoma Pueblo writer, performing artist, and filmmaker. Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, the Kenyon Review, New Poets of the American West, and more. She is the author of Red Milk (2013) and lives in Burien, Washington.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a national holiday that honors the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as North America.

First celebrated in 1992 on the second Monday in October, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was officially proclaimed a national holiday in 2021.
