A look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 1999 the Spartan boy’s basketball team was heading to State. Kasey Ulin’s grandmother Barbara’s reaction was featured in a front-page photo. Also featured in a photo was FHS teacher Don Hall who had painted his face for the game! Mrs. Leibold had passed at the age of 90. During WWII she had served as the Public Health Nurse. She also worked as a registered nurse in both Forks and Clallam Bay. Also having passed was 94-year-old Makah Tribal member Lena Claplanhoo, she was a notable basket-weaver and teacher of native culture.

In 1974 Spartan wrestler Jerry Banner had placed within the state’s top eight wrestlers in the state in the 101 pound division at competition in Moses Lake. The Sears Store was offering family portraits for just 99¢. Forks 4th graders had participated in a map-making project. In classified ads, five acres south of Forks with river-frontage was for sale for $2,500. ONP was once again warning hikers to our beaches about the danger there, as a young girl had recently been swept out to sea.

In 1952 it was sad news for the community as log truck driver Cyrus Maxfield had lost his life in an accident at Lake Crescent near La Poel. Ironically Maxfield’s father had also died from an accident at Lake Crescent after suffering a heart attack. It was Girl Scout cookie time. The Wayne Kreiders had welcomed a baby girl, her name was Janet. Ruel and Vedder was offering the new Bendix Dialamatic Washer for $127, to replace your old wringer washer!
