This week in 1999 a group photo showed that the Forks Middle School Mentorship Program had traveled to Olympia to meet with legislators (photo). A 24-year-old man had been arrested for going onto school grounds with a firearm. Sarah Hansen had won first place at a Student Art Show.
Fifty years ago this week information was shared on the front page regarding the Forks senior class play. Student actors were presenting a production of Meet Me in St. Louis; Kevin Borde and Janice Strom had the lead roles. Senior class photos for the FHS class of 1974 filled two full pages. It had been a wet and muddy annual Kid’s Fishing Derby, winners and their prizes were featured in a photo (photo). A half-page ad announced that the Grand Opening of Howard’s Music was happening. Refreshments made by Gwen Genson and Millie Thompson were being served. The new store featured records, cassettes, sheet music, and instruments, as well as local art and native basketry.
In 1952 a helicopter had been used to disperse grass seed over 480 acres of land burned in the September fire. The areas seeded were in the Kugel Creek and Mt. Bigler areas. The seeding was done to help reduce erosion. Authorities were nervous as snags continued to smolder almost 6 months after the big blaze and spring rainfall was below normal. A number of people in Forks had been interviewed and recorded sharing their stories about the Big Fire. The recordings were to be used in an upcoming radio broadcast that would be heard around the country. The Forks Lions Club had completed a “House Numbering Project” to help assist with emergencies.
