This week in 1999 it was sad news for Clallam Bay that long-time business Borde’s Drugs would be closing at the end of the year. Owner Kevin Borde said the decision was not easy but changes in insurance and policies of the state insurance commission left no other alternative. Community members had visited the new Olympic National Forest headquarters on Tillicum Lane. The Forks Lions had delivered beans and potatoes to the Forks Food Bank as part of their Firewood for Food program with Quincy, WA. Fourteen-year-old Andrew Gillespie won awards and medals at the Poultry show in Elma (photo).
Fifty years ago a memorial fund had been set up after the unexpected death of Gene Konopaski. Funds raised would go to help purchase a new ambulance for community use. Konopaski had been a supporter of the CB Clinic and other community medical needs. The Forks Library (a very small building at the time) had been overwhelmed by the 300-plus kids that had shown up for a Halloween party. The children were escorted to the Congregational Church, a much larger space, and the party continued. The 4-H had held an Achievement Dinner (photo) Kathy Archer was chosen as Outstanding 4-H’er. Special Rein-Rider awards were presented (photo).
This week in 1952 services for Sussie Morganroth had been held in La Push with Charles Howeattle officiating. She was 87 years old at the time of her death and had lived in La Push all of her life. The Forks Lions had sponsored a Halloween Parade; the communities of Tyee and Sappho also each had a parade of their own. A Halloween Dance was planned at the American Legion. Rides and babysitting services were being offered for those who needed them so they could go and VOTE!
