A look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000 the OCC inmate who walked away from that facility about a week before had been located in McMinnville Oregon. Anastasia Fleck and many more dancing Forks kids had participated in Heidi’s School of Dance presentation of Nutcracker. Anastasia had portrayed a flower (photo). The Sekiu Salmon Derby was coming up on Feb. 19 and 20. In Spartan basketball news, Kurt Olson had scored his 1,000th point.

In 1975 Mayor Depew was not happy about HB 149 that would require the city to hire people for eight-hour shifts to sit and watch the chlorinator around the clock. Saying it could cost the city $50,000 a year he was urging townsfolk to contact Olympia and just say no. Mr. and Mrs. William Kinsman were crowned King and Queen of Hearts at the senior Valentine Luncheon (photo). The number one song of the week on the KVAC request line was Black Water by The Doobie Brothers. The Lions Club was bringing Merlin the Magician to the old gym for one night only, the cost was $1.50 per person.

In 1953 the Forks Forum reported that weather observer Mrs. O.J. Ford, had shared that for the month of January Forks had gotten 41.70 inches of rain. It rained every day that month but one. The entire previous year, 1952, had recorded 90.95 inches of rain. It was sad news for La Push residents that Quileute Tribal member Frank Jackson, age 21, had been swept out to sea after his canoe had stalled and he attempted to swim to shore. The Coast Guard and La Push residents were searching. The Forks Town Council was having its first meeting in the newly completed Town Hall (now Quigley’s building on Spartan Ave.)
