Buyer Beware

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Are you planning to buy a house? Does it have a stove or chimney? If so, do you expect to use that stove or chimney after you buy the place?

Over the past year, I have got dozens of calls that start, “I just bought a house and need the chimney checked.” Nine out of 10 so far have needed major repairs.

For decades, banks and insurance companies have required chimney inspections before closing. Some Washington counties require removal of old, non-certified wood stoves at sale of a home. “Home inspectors” usually have recommended chimney inspections before sale.

I don’t know just what changed all this here in the West End, but BUYER BEWARE is still very good advice!
