Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies investigating the Aug. 15 stabbing that shut down the Clallam Bay Corrections Center believe the incident might have been motivated by white supremacist gang activity.

The Peninsula Daily News reported Sunday Sgt. Brian King referred a charge of second-degree assault against Daniel E. Johnson, the inmate who allegedly sharpened a toothbrush into a shank and used it to repeatedly stab another inmate, to county prosecutors.

The stabbing sent the injured inmate for treatment at Forks Community Hospital and prompted prison officials to lock down the facility from the evening of Aug. 15 until the morning of Aug. 17 to search for more weapons. The victim was returned to prison later that same night.

King told the Peninsula Daily News they believe Johnson is a member of the Aryan Nation and attacked the other prisoner for trying to leave the gang. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Prosecutors said more investigation is needed before official charges are filed.
