Shred Event Nov. 4
The Forks Forum will host a Shred Event to benefit the Forks Food Bank on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m in the parking lot at 490 S. Forks Ave. Bring your items to shred and make a donation of cash or non-perishable foods to the Food Bank. Shredding costs are donated by First Federal Savings.
Drug Take Back Event
Chinook Pharmacy is participating in the National Drug Take-Back Day, Oct. 28, with an event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the pharmacy, 11 S. Forks Ave.
TAX-AIDE volunteers needed!
Are you good with numbers and good with people? Then become an IRS-certified TAX-AIDE volunteer! Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. If you are bilingual, you are especially needed in Forks.
TAX-AIDE provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for low- and middle-income and senior members of our community. The TAX-AIDE program is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation. You don’t need to be an AARP member or retiree to volunteer or to receive tax preparation services from TAX-AIDE.
New volunteers must sign up by December in order to become IRS-certified before the upcoming tax season. Volunteers do an extensive amount of study, using training materials and software provided by the IRS. All volunteers must pass the IRS Tests each year before assisting taxpayers during the tax season.

West End Youth League girls basketball grades 3-6 sign-ups will be Thursday, Oct. 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Pacific Pizza. The cost is $35 per player. Caldecott Medalist Javaka Steptoe Offers All-Ages Art Workshop
2017 Caldecott Medalist and nationally renowned artist Javaka Steptoe will offer an all-ages hands-on art workshop at the Port Angeles Main Library, Thursday, Nov. 9,2 at 6:30 p.m. During the workshop, participants will use a wide variety of materials to make artwork based off themes found in Steptoe’s work. Steptoe will also be available to autograph books at the end of the session. Copies of Steptoe’s books will be available for purchase at the workshop through Odyssey Bookshop. Adults and children of all ages are welcome to attend, but children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

County Emergency
Preparedness
The next meeting of the West Jefferson County Emergency Preparedness Work Group will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Clearwater School. Beneficial Insects
WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Audreen Williams will explain why gardeners should recognize several common insects as more helpful than harmful and employ them to do their free work in their vegetable gardens on Thursday, Oct. 26, at noon in the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.
This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.
She will identify the adult and larvae stages of a number of beetles, lacewings, predatory and parasitic wasps and others. She will discuss at what stage or stages they are likely to be most beneficial. Williams will also explain how to protect and attract these pollinators and beneficial predators to the home garden.
A Master Gardener since 2012, Williams earned the 2014 Master Gardener of the Year Award. She manages the Port Angeles fifth Street Garden Master Gardener Plots and volunteers at Master Gardeners Woodcock Demonstration Garden, Saturday Walk in the Garden, and 4-H Program.
The Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips education series continues on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Presentations occur from noon-1 p.m. For more information, call 360-565-2679.
Advanced Planning
for the End of Life
Have you been meaning to update your Health Care Directive or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, or just want to communicate better with your friends and family about their plans? The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) will offer an Advanced Planning Seminar at the Clallam Bay Branch Library on Friday, Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m. The seminar is expected to last about three hours. Judy McCay and Karen Griffith will lead this free, engaging, and practical seminar.
In this Advanced Planning Seminar, participants will learn how to communicate their end-of-life wishes to loved ones and to physicians. End-of-life choices and the free services offered by End of Life Washington will be covered during the seminar. Participants will also be guided through the process of documenting their wishes about the kind of medical care they do or do not wish for at the end of life.
Participants will have the opportunity to work with the End of Life Washington Advance Directive which combines a Health Care Directive and a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care into one document.
There is no cost for the seminar, documents, or Advance Directive notarization. Class size is limited and pre-registration is recommended. The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) offers tens of thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks through the Washington Anytime Library. Library users who currently access the Washington Anytime Library using the OverDrive app can continue to do so, but Libby provides a new, convenient way read digital content on your phone or tablet.
Libby allows users to instantly connect with any of thousands of titles to read or listen to, and the app is free through your app store. You can borrow books on your mobile device anytime, anywhere, and start reading instantly. All available titles are free through NOLS and the Washington Anytime Library.
Libby was designed to be simpler than other reading apps. The “One-Tap Reading App” lets users intuitively move from searching to checkout to downloading to reading. FOR VETERANS
On Nov. 11, Americans throughout the world will commemorate Veterans Day, a day set aside to thank our nation’s veterans for service given and sacrifices made to protect the freedoms our great nation. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home and Crematory is sponsoring its eighth annual Sweaters for Veterans initiative.
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1 through Friday, Nov. 10, Drennan & Ford Funeral Home and Crematory will be collecting new or gently used sweaters, warm clothing, blankets, rain gear, gloves, hats, socks and the like to be distributed to individual veterans within our county in need of these items. Everyone is invited to support our veterans by donating cold weather clothing to us at 260 Monroe Road., Port Angeles between the hours of 9 a.m.-4 p.m. during these days.
Folks for Change Meets
The next Folks for Change meeting will be held at the Forks Library on Saturday, Oct, 28 from noon-2 p.m. (Note the time change). Join us for a respectful roundtable discussion regarding the state of our nation. All are welcome.

CLUB SIGN UPS
Forks Wrestling Club sign-ups will take place on Friday, Oct. 27 and Monday, Oct. 30 at Pacific Pizza from 5-7 p.m. for ages 5 and up. The cost is $35 and includes a team t-shirt.
A USA Wrestling Card is also required before being allowed to wrestle.
