LATINO CULTURE, THEATER, AND ARTS SHOWCASED IN TEATRO MILAGRO’S OCT 17 PERFORMANCES

Teatro Milagro (Miracle Theater) of Portland, Ore. will return to the Olympic Peninsula, offering two performances of their newest production, titled “Bi,” which was written and directed by Georgina Escobar and choreographed by Gabriela Portuguez.

The bi-lingual, Spanish/English theater group will offer a mid-day performance on Oct. 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus, and an evening performance, at 7 p.m. in the Forks High School Commons in Forks.

Inspired by the book Flatland by Edwin Abbot, “Bi” is the story four friends searching for their identities, seeking to break out of the boxes others intend for them.

The Miracle Theatre Group, founded in 1985, aims to provide “extraordinary Latino theatre, culture and arts education experiences for the enrichment of all communities,” according to the group’s website.

The event is a true collaboration, as it was made possible through the Peninsula College Foundation’s “Exceptional Faculty Award” and partnerships with the Quillayute Valley School District (QVSD), Peninsula College Sociology Dept, the Social Lights Club, Rainbow Alliance, and the English Dept.

The event is free and open to the public.

ShakeOut at

Your Library

On Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m., the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) will join more than 20 million people worldwide to participate in a “Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill. This is an opportunity for community members to join their local library staff in practicing and implementing the central tenets of earthquake preparedness: “Drop, cover, and hold on.”

NOLS staff at each library location will lead the drills by making an announcement at 10:18 a.m. and instructing patrons and staff to “drop” to the ground, take “cover” under a desk or sturdy table, and “hold on” for the remainder of the 90-second drill.

Originating in California in 2008, the annual drill is now a globe-spanning event with most participants performing the drill on the same day, at the same time. Additional information about disaster preparedness in Clallam and Jefferson counties will also be available for participants to take home. To learn more about this and other free educational programs at your library, visit www.nols.org or send an email to Discover@nols.org.

What type of health care would you want if you were unable to tell your health care providers yourself? Planning ahead is an important step in making sure your wishes are honored.

Trained representatives from Olympic Medical Center will discuss future and end-of-life health care choices at library programs at all four branches of the North Olympic Library System (NOLS): at the Clallam Bay Branch Library on Friday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Forks Branch Library at 4 p.m.

These Advance Care Planning programs are the beginning of a process to help you understand possible future health care choices and make a plan that you can share with your loved ones before a crisis occurs. Information will be provided about advance care planning documents including Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, Health Care Directives and Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment. A question and answer period will follow each of the 60-minute presentations.
