fete veterans
Forks schools are planning a special all-school assembly to honor veterans on Friday, Nov. 8.
Veterans, their families and friends, are encouraged to attend the assembly, which will be at 2 p.m. in the Forks High School gymnasium.

Genealogical Society
slates open house
The Clallam County Genealogical Society Research Center has slated an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
Volunteers will help guide newcomers through the center’s research tools.
From 1-2:30 p.m. Jana Hyatt will present a class on “Getting the Most Out of the Census Records,” aimed at helping beginning genealogists.
The class is free to members of the genealogical society, $5 for non-members. Reservations are suggested.
The center is at 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd. and open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. For more information, call 360-417-5000.
Tree fruits to be celebrated
The Olympic Orchard Society’s Fall Fruit Show will be at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.
Growers will bring hundreds of varieties of apples and pears for attendees to purchase and study.
Featured speaker will be Dr. Joseph Postman, USDA Pear Repository, in Corvallis, Ore.
Grafted trees will be for sale suitable for growing in this area. Planting and care instructions will be given in addition to information about the best use of the fruit.
Attendees also can bring in their own apples for assistance identifying the variety.

Drug Take Back Day Saturday
Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, the Port Angeles Police Department and Sequim Police Department will participate in the free National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
Citizens will be able to take potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs to one of two locations.
In Port Angeles, the Drug Take Back location will be in the main parking lot of the county courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.
The free event will be staffed by the Port Angeles Police Department and Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sequim Police Department will be hosting a Drug Take Back event at its office, 609 W. Washington St., Suite 116 in Sequim.
During the rest of the year, individuals can drop off their unwanted drugs and medications at the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office at the courthouse in Port Angeles during regular business hours.
Citizens also can dispose of their unused medications with the exception of controlled substances and liquids at Jim’s Pharmacy, 424 E. Second St. in Port Angeles during regular store hours.

PC to screen Bengali film
A Bengali film that premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City this past January will be screened at Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in Maier Performance Hall.
The film, “Shyamal Uncle Turns Off the Lights,” is from Global Lens 2013, part of the Global Film Initiative, and is co-sponsored by the Port Townsend Film Institute and Goddard College.
Directed by Suman Ghosh, Shyamal, tells the story of an 80-year-old Kolkata retiree who is on a mission to get his neighborhood streetlights turned off after sunrise after he notices they stay on all day as well. The film is based on a real incident and the 80-year-old protagonist plays himself in the film.
Admission to the film is $5; Peninsula College students will be admitted free-of-charge with a current student ID.
The next film in the series is The Invisible War, which will be screened on Nov. 8.
