Dobyns returns to
Forks for concert
Ben Dobyns, who grew up in Forks as the son of Dr. Richard Dobyns, returns to town Friday to perform a special jazz piano concert at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Dobyns grew up making music and movies in Forks before his family moved away. Pastor Pam Hunter said he has since trained to become a “terrific pianist with a gift for jazz improvisation,” in addition to a job developing graphics for video games.
His concert will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church, 250 N. Blackberry Ave.
It is part of the church’s “Raise the Roof” concert series.
Admission is by donation, which will go to the church’s capital improvements fund. Desserts will be served at intermission.
Domestic Violence
Walk is Friday
Forks Abuse Program is organizing a walk to raise awareness about the impacts of domestic violence on families and communities.
The walk begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Tillicum Park, though participants are asked to show up early — and to bring umbrellas. All are invited to walk.

Relay for Life
planning meet Tuesday
A meeting for prospective volunteers who would like to help organize the 2014 Forks Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the fight against cancer, will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Community Health Conference room next to Forks Community Hospital.
The Forks Relay for Life will be Aug. 1-2.

First Fed offers free shred
First Federal bank, 131 Calawah Way, is hosting a free shred day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12, for those who want to destroy documents containing personal or sensitive information.
The free shredding is limited to five bags or five boxes per vehicle.
“Riggins and Riesling”
tickets on sale
Tickets are now available for “Riggins and Riesling,” this year’s edition of the Forks Chamber of Commerce wine and cheese fundraiser.
The event, which the chamber has put on for the past 19 years, will be at the Roundhouse, 110 La Push Rd., Nov. 9.
Tickets, which must be purchased in advance because of state liquor laws, are $10 each.

Genealogical Society
meets Saturday
The Clallam County Genealogical Society’s general membership meeting is from 10 a.m to noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Port Angeles Library’s Raymond Carver Room.
Raymond Madsen will present a program on “The 1812 War Pension Papers.” These records contain information on military service, deaths, marriages, land warrants and migration.
Madsen worked for the Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He was a British reference consultant at the Family History Library for 10 years and a product manager for FamilySearch for 23 years, producing the first of the FamilySearch databases including the IGI, Ancestral File and the Social Security Death Indexes.
He retired from the Family History Department after 33 years in 2011 and moved to Sequim with his wife, Nila.
The meeting is free and open to the public.

Library to shake it out
At 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, Clallam County public library patrons in Forks, Clallam Bay, Port Angeles and Sequim will be asked to “Drop, Cover & Hold On” as part of the Great Washington ShakeOut.
The North Olympic Library System will join residents statewide in promoting earthquake preparedness.
Library staff will lead the drill, making an announcement at 10:17 a.m. for patrons and staff to “drop, cover and hold on.”
Disaster preparedness materials specific to Clallam County will be available.

Forks Abuse sets open house
In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Forks Abuse Program will hold an open house at its office, 81 S. 2nd Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.
Staff will provide information about its services and what impacts domestic violence has on West End communities as well as pro-
viding volunteer opportunities.

Fiber meeting
The newly-formed Pacific Northwest Fiber Web will hold a general interest meeting in Chimacum on Monday, Oct. 14, for those interested in the production, processing and sale of animal fibers such as sheep, llama or alpaca wool.
The meeting will be at the Chimacum Grange, 9572 Rhody Dr., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Obamacare seminars
The North Olympic Library System will present a pair of seminars on the Affordable Care Act with Phil Castell of Castell Insurance.
Open enrollment in the federal program’s new insurance exchanges began on Oct. 1. Castell’s seminars are designed to educate attendees about the new healthcare options.
The first seminar will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
The second will be Oct. 29 at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Library Foundation
lands grant
The North Olympic Library Foundation has received a $3,500 grant from the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund to support general operating expenses.
The Benjamin N. Phillips Fund was established in 2006 by the estate of Joy Phillips to honor her late husband. The fund makes grants to organizations improving the lives of Clallam County residents.
The library foundation was created in 2012 with Patty Hannah, Kristin Glenn, Jim Hallett, Patrick Irwin, Diane Kaufman, Yvonne Ziomkowski and Don Zanon as board members.

Guitarist opens Maier
Hall concert series
Internationally known classical guitarist Paul Galbraith will perform at Peninsula College in Port Angeles at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, as the 2013-2014 opener of the Maier Hall Concert Series.
Galbraith will perform music by Haydn, Ponce, Albeniz and Granados, with a special Bach selection.
Subscriptions for the concert series are now on sale and can be purchased online at www.pencol.edu/cutural-events. Cost for the entire concert series is $50.
