‘Riggins and Riesling’

Tickets for “Riggins and Riesling,” this year’s edition of the Forks Chamber of Commerce wine and cheese fundraiser are now available. The event, which the chamber has put on for the past 19 years, will be at the Roundhouse, 110 La Push Road, on Nov. 9. Tickets, which must be purchased in advance because of state liquor laws, are $10 each.

This year’s event will feature a special tasting of wines handmade by John Glover.

The chamber is seeking donations for a silent auction.

Also, nominations are being accepted for “Best of” Business, Volunteer and Citizen. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the chamber’s website, picked up at the Chamber office or at a Wednesday meeting. Return it by e-mail, fax, mail or call us and we will pick it up. The deadline is noon, Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Soroptimists

fund mammograms

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and SIORF (Soroptimist International of the Olympic Rain Forest ) is reminding women of the importance of mammograms. In conjunction with Forks Community Hospital SIORF will pay for mammograms for uninsured or under-insured women.

Applications for this service can be had at the all local medical clinics and Forks Hospital. One needs only reference SIORF Mammogram Fund.  

Frequently, SIORF will assist with additional tests if they are needed.

SIORF, through its SOS (Soroptimist Oncology Support) fund, assists with travel expenses related to cancer treatment. It encourages women to take advantage of these lifesaving resources.

Men’s Fellowship

breakfast Saturday

On Oct. 19 the Forks Non-Denominational Christian Men’s Fellowship group will have its monthly breakfast at the Congregational Church. Breakfast will be served with short devotional and discussion to follow, then off to community service project. This men’s group has been meeting since last April and has been changing the lives of the people they come in contact with.

Rainy reunion Saturday

Forks High School Class of 1963 will have its class reunion this weekend.

Events begin with a special seating at the Oct. 18 Harvest Dinner at the Forks Congregational Church.

Saturday events include an 11 a.m. tour of the new high school, followed by a social hour at Jane’s Pool House at 3 p.m., followed by a catered buffet dinner at 4:30 p.m.

Class member Margaret Voyles said she has been unable to locate classmates Byllie DeFrang, Jim Meisner and George Robinson.

PTO book fair ends Friday

Forks Elementary PTO’s annual Scholastic Fall Book Fair runs through Friday Oct. 18. The book fair is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Researcher to speak about woodpeckers at ONRC

Most of us think of the pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) as a mature or even old-growth forest species. That’s why we use them as indicators of forest health. However, wildlife observers now see them migrating into the suburban areas in the greater Seattle region. Why is this? How are they doing? Are they successful or it is just the remains of a past population, using what is left of the forest that is been taken over by housing developments?

University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences doctoral candidate Jorge Tomasevic will share his experiences with this species in this most unusual setting.

Tomasevic is a part of the Wildlife Science Group at UW. He came to the United States as a Fulbright Fellow from Chile. From the cold forests of Patagonia to the arid desert of Atacama, from the native forests struggling exotic pine plantations to the heights of an island in the Pacific Ocean or up high in the Andes, he has participated in several research projects dealing with the ecology and conservation of forest birds and endangered species in Chile and now in the Pacific Northwest.

Tomasevic will speak Friday at 7 p.m. in the Hemlock Forest Conference Room at the Olympic Natural Resources Center, 1455 S. Forks Ave.

Everyone is welcome; no RSVP needed for this program and no admission is charged. Funding for this presentation is provided by the Rosmond Forestry Education Fund.
