The Friends of the Forks Library (FOFL) honored the staff at Forks Memorial Library during Library Workers Appreciation Day held Saturday, April 14 at the library, which is a branch of the North Olympic Library System. The Friends provided a long table spread of fine foods prepared by Self’s Catering of Forks. Facilities Specialist Deanna Long (top left), who just moved from arid Death Valley, Ca. to rainy Forks, is the Forks Library’s newest employee. Topping her delicious plate full of desserts with some homemade berry sauce is Carolyn Self. Carolyn and her husband Curt Self are finding success in their catering business, providing gourmet food with a West End touch to events located as faraway as Portland. Theresa Tetreau took a break from her busy schedule overseeing both West End NOLS libraries, Forks and Clallam Bay, to chat with Frances Buck, the lady who headed up the Forks Memorial Library prior to Tetreau. Buck worked her way up from a library page to branch manager during her long career, which ran from 1973 through 2002. Buck recalled working at the Forks Library when it was in a small building near the former Pay ’n Save in Forks, and moving the library into the former bank building. Ellen Matheny of the FOFL said the organization has raised locally about $50,000 towards the about $1 million needed to complete a library renovation. .project that will include putting a new pitched roof atop the library.
