Driver airlifted after truck strikes tree on Highway 101

A Washington State Patrol memo is reporting a single-vehicle collision occurred on US Highway 101 near Milepost 165 when a 61-year-old Hoquiam man, identified as James R. Day, fell asleep while driving, causing his vehicle to veer off the road. The incident occurred at approximately 7:11 a.m., on January 9, 2025.

According to the WSP, the southbound 2004 Kenworth log truck left the roadway to the right and struck a tree before coming to rest in the southbound ditch. The truck was hauling a trailer at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene and determined that the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered significant injuries. He was airlifted from FCH to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

The log truck and trailer were both totaled in the collision and were towed to Pat Rabey Trucking Inc. in Hoquiam.

Authorities confirmed that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident. Charges against the driver include “Wheels Off Roadway” and failure to wear a seatbelt.
