Members of the department entered the residence with the appropriate PPE and with a department carbon monoxide monitor. Our monitor also indicated elevated levels of carbon monoxide which were 32 PPM inside the residence. After looking around and unable to find the source of the carbon monoxide, the Red Cross was notified to place the residents into temporary housing for the night so the source could be located.

After searching the residence it was determined the source was from the coals and burnt debris that was removed from the wood stove and placed into a galvanized metal container that was next to the wood burning stove. The galvanized metal container with the ash/wood coals read 102 PPM, which indicated that was the source of the carbon monoxide. The container was removed and the homeowner was educated about the removal and proper disposal of ash/coals.
