Forks City Council bids farewell to two City Council members

Due to last Monday being a holiday, the Forks City Council met for the last time for 2023 on Tuesday evening last week. In addition to taking care of multiple business items, Juanita Weissenfels and Joseph Echeita were also acknowledged with plaques as they attended their last meeting.

Weissenfels has served on the city council for 12 years and Echeita ran unsuccessfully in 2021 and then was appointed in November 2022, filling the vacated seat of Mike Gilstrap. Eicheita will be moving outside of the city boundary.

In other business, the council approved Ordinance #669 a budget Amendment that would see increases to the Water, Street and Airport Industrial funds, and Ordinance #668 the $11,552,397 City of Forks Budget for 2024. The council approved to rebid the Wastewater Treatment Plant bids. Council member Clint Wood commented about the large difference between the high and low bids. The city will seek some help with funding sources for the project.

The council approved for city administration to enter into an agreement with the UWs Northwest Seismic Network at the Quillayute Airport. There was a discussion about the Clallam County PUD’s plan for a grant for a West End Resiliency Transmission Loop Project. The project would offer a buried line running parallel to the Bonneville power lines and would offer backup power when Bonneville goes down and the community has an added wait for repair crews to come from Olympia.

The repositioning of a cell tower was approved.

Also discussed were FEMA flood maps, and a Fire District 6 Grant that would offer energy resiliency at the Quillayute Airport.

In other items the Lloyd J. Allen Trust made a donation of $36,000 to use for needed upgrades at Tillicum Park.
