Forks 10th annual Relay For Life begins at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. as teams begin walking the track at Spartan Stadium. This year’s goal is to raise for the Forks event is to raise $33,000 on behalf of the American Cancer Society. The event’s theme for 2012 is “The Magic of Relay: Hope It, Dream It, Cure It!” The theme is being tied into Magic Carpet Passports to be used to guide participants around the track. For those who take the passport to the 12 team sites located along the track and get it stamped at each stop, the passport can be traded in for entry into a prize drawing. A Celebration of Survivors and sponsor recognition will take place during opening ceremonies at 6:00 p.m. Forks sets the Peninsula record for sponsorship participation among the locally-sponsored Relay for Life events, with 34 backers. Festivities continue throughout the evening with live entertainment at the stadium, “Minute-to-win-it” games, fabulous food, “Bald Beauties” and more. As darkness falls, hope lights the way with the lighting ceremony for luminaria , the paper sack, candlelit personalized memorials local residents place along the inner edge of the track to remember those who have been lost to cancer. At 10 p.m.about 500 luminaria bags with candles are to be lit. Each luminaria represents someone who has battled cancer — some honor the survivors, while others are in loving memory of those lost. Wish Lanterns lift off into the night skies at 11 p.m. Teams continually walk the track all through the night guided by the light of the luminarias. At daylight, festivities begin again, breakfast is served, and live entertainment continues. Scott Seaman, who suffers from MS, has been in training and plans to make a special lap around the track at 10:30 a.m. The final lap around the track for teams takes place at 11:30 a.m., followed by a “Fight Back!” closing ceremony.
