In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in concert with all National Park Service sites that charge entrance fees, Olympic National Park will offer free entry on Monday, Jan. 18.

“All visitors are offered free entry this Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “This is our first of 16 free days in our hundredth-birthday year and we hope everyone will come help us celebrate!”

Over the holiday weekend, the Olympic National Park Visitor Center will screen a 30-minute video program entitled “A New Time, A New Voice,” about the life and work of Rev. King. The program will be shown at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 16, 17 and 18, with additional viewings available upon request. The visitor center is located at 3002 Mount Angeles Road in Port Angeles and is open daily in winter from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Most park areas, including Lake Crescent, all park beaches and the Quinault, Queets and Hoh rain forest are open.

The Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to be open on Monday, Jan. 18, in addition to its normally scheduled days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Weather permitting, the road is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. and close at dusk. Hurricane Ridge is subject to high winds and heavy snow during the winter, and the road’s opening is always dependent on current road and weather conditions. For up to date information about road opening times and conditions, people should call the park’s Road Condition Hotline at 360-565-3131 or follow @HRWinterAccess on Twitter.

Parking is limited at Hurricane Ridge and all visitors are urged to carpool or to use the Hurricane Ridge Shuttle van. Schedule and price information about the shuttle is available by calling All Points Charters and Tours in Port Angeles at 360-460-7131.

Several park roads remain closed due to storm and flood damage, including the Elwha Olympic Hot Springs Road, Sol Duc Road and Quinault Graves Creek Road.  Deer Park Road is closed for the season.
