A new principal will take the helm at Clallam Bay School when classes start next Wednesday.

After serving as the shop teacher at Neah Bay since 2007, Mark Herndon moves east to take over principal duties for the upcoming school year.

He grew up spending summers in Neah Bay and said he leapt at the opportunity to take a job in the area after spending 20 years in Montana.

“My sister was born in Forks and it makes her jealous that I get to be here while she does not,” Herndon said.

Herndon earned his principal credentials two years ago, but said he took the opportunity at Neah Bay to learn the working challenges of the job from principal Dr. Ann Renker.

He said Clallam Bay’s HSPE test scores make him excited to lead the staff.

“Clallam Bay School is a fantastic place for students and staff alike,” Herndon said. “The more I look at Clallam Bay School, the more I am excited to be here.”

A Harley rider and classic car enthusiast, Herndon continues to serve as Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy reserve.

He and his wife, Melanie, have three children who attend Clallam Bay, Jeddie, 16, Reagan, 12, and Reniff, 9.

His most difficult challenge, he said, may be swapping out his red-and-black Neah Bay wardrobe to the Bruins’ gold and black.
