Washington State Patrol and state Department of Corrections reports have one inmate shot dead and during an attempted escape on Wednesday morning, June 29 at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.

A corrections officer was taken hostage at about 10 a.m. by inmate Dominick Maldonado, 25. Maldonado used a pair of scissors to threaten the officer. Then inmate Kevin Newland, 25, drove a forklift out of a work facility and into a fence surrounding the perimeter of the prison at Clallam Bay. A corrections officer first fired a warning shot at Newland, who proceeded to attempt to escape, and then killed him with one shot. The officer Maldonado had taken hostage escaped with minor injuries after corrections officers intervened. The two inmates were working in coordination on the attempted escape and had food, drinking water and other materials secreted in their clothing.

Newland confessed to suffocating a 19-year-old girl, Jaimie Lynn Drake, in Spokane. He was convicted in 2007 of killing the girl. A number of YouTube.com videos detail his murder case. Click here to go to the YouTube.com page.

The prison is under lockdown. It holds over 800 offenders. All were accounted for following the morning shooting incident.

Maldonado is serving a 163-year sentence. He was convicted of charges related to a 2005 shooting of seven people at the Tacoma Mall. Newland was in prison for a first-degree murder in the Spokane area, serving a 45-year sentence.

Clallam County deputies, Washington State Patrol troopers, Border Patrol officers and other law enforcement agencies are on the scene at Clallam Bay.
