Joyce Daze Wild Blackberry Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3. Visitors can enjoy a slice of blackberry pie with a good time. The annual event kicks off at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Crescent Grange and lasts until 3:30 p.m. with a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses. Joyce is located 14 miles west of Port Angeles on State Route 112, which is Washington’s prettiest National Scenic Byway.
Highlights of the festival include homemade pies, a parade, children’s activities, an arts and crafts show, vendors’ booths, demonstrations, and live entertainment. The Joyce Fire Department will present a Car Extrication Demonstration at 10:30 a.m. in front of the mini-mall. Rumor has it that a certain Mr. Big will make an appearance at the festival this year. Most likely, somewhere near the blackberry pies.
The festival’s main attraction is freshly baked pies made with the celebrated local wild blackberries. Volunteers gather in the local high school kitchen for the two days prior to the event to make the pies. Each year more than 200 pies are baked. Slices of pie topped with ice cream are on sale for as long as they last. Proceeds go towards scholarships and local projects.
A pie-baking contest gives local bakers a chance to show off their skills. Pies must be made with the small, wild blackberries. To submit entries for the Blackberry Pie Contest, drop off pies at the Joyce Museum between 9 and 10:45 a.m. Judging begins at 11 a.m.
Entertainment begins at 10 a.m. Local bands will be featured throughout the day in front of the Joyce Museum. The entertainment, which is always fun and lively, is organized by Dave and Rosalie Secord of Luck of the Draw.
