Following two days of testimony, a Clallam County jury on Wednesday convicted Montrel Sharpless of Forks of felony harassment -threats to kill. According to testimony, Sharpless, 41, threatened to kill a 17 year-old boy and claimed he was looking for a knife during an altercation inside Sharpless’s trailer at the Rainforest Mobile Home Park in Forks.
The boy’s father testified that he forced his way into Sharpless’s trailer where Sharpless had ahold of his son. After Sharpless and the father grappled over the boy, both father and son were able to flee the trailer. Other Park residents testified that Sharpless confronted and threatened a man he believed was a bad influence on the boy after the scuffle inside the trailer.
Officer Brent Kempster of the Forks Police Department testified that following his arrest of Sharpless, the defendant continued to make graphic and violent comments to him while in the back of the patrol car, including that he would stomp on Officer Kempster’s face and eat his children.
The jury was unable to reach a verdict on a misdemeanor assault charge involving the same boy.
Sharpless has prior felony convictions from Virginia and Clallam County for assault of a police officer, said Deputy Prosecutor Steve Johnson, and misdemeanor convictions for assault, disorderly conduct, and indecent exposure. His presumptive sentencing range is 4 to 12 months. Sentencing is scheduled for August 24.
