Modern housing for low-income residents of the West End is a vision becoming a reality along Founders Way.

About 15 units of housing, including two- and three-bedroom units for families, is nearing completion at the project that is being built by an agency of the Catholic Archdiocise of Seattle. Parishioners at  St. Anne’s Church in Forks came up with dream over 10 years ago.

The Housing Authority of Clallam County will be managing the 30-unit development, which is being funded with IRS tax credits that can be sold and applied to such projects. The final cost of the development is estimated at about $8 million. The building of Founders Way with federal funds allowed access to the new Bogachiel Clinic, the Burke Place project and to this project.

So far the project is nameless, but that should be resolved by the time of the blessing of the first units to be finished, likely about late September.

There is a waiting list for the units, which replaced a row of aging low-income housing units  that were demolished last year.

Pam Tietz of the Housing Authority of Clallam County, who is also working with West End Outreach on the project, said most of the residents who will be moving into the units have roots on the West End. Non-local residents “will be the exception to the rule,” she said.
