Funeral services for Mary Jo Butterfield, a Makah elder, were held Tuesday in the Neah Bay Community Gym, after Butterfield died in a car wreck near Sekiu on Oct. 30.

Butterfield, 81, was driving a white 2003 Ford Taurus east on Highway 112 west of Sekiu when her car apparently crossed the center line and struck the oncoming 1999 Nissan Sentra being driven by Randee R. Murdcoh, 23, Sekiu.

Butterfield was declared dead at the scene, according to Trooper Russ Winger, spokesman for the Washington State Patrol’s Peninsula detachment.

Murdoch sustained injuries to her extremities and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

The State Patrol was still investigating the cause of the crash as of press time.

Butterfield served on the Makah Tribal Council and on the governing board of Americans for Indian Opportunity, a national native advocacy organization based out of New Mexico.

Butterfield’s oral history of the Makah were recorded as part of the Washington State Historical Society’s Women’s History Consortium.
