Mt. Olympus Chapter Back Country Horsemen of Washington (BCHW) and Olympic National Park are sponsoring a Share the Trail event for hikers, runners, bicycle riders, horse and mule riders and packers, and llama packers. The free event will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m-2 p.m. at the Upper Elwha Community Center located west of Port Angeles at 90 Old State Road. Travel south on Herrick Road, located about a mile west of the Elwha bridge on US Highway 101, and follow the signs to the community center.
Share the Trail will include informational booths set up by Olympic National Park, Department of Natural Resources, Olympic Discovery Trail, Clallam Conservation District, Sound Bikes and Kayaks, and more. The event will also include hands-on mule packing demonstrations as well as presentations and information on Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics to practice while hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping.
There will be activities geared toward children of all ages as well, including craft stations, pony and horse rides and Leave No Trace (LNT) activities and prizes.
Come gather maps on the different trail systems in the area, learn about how horses and mules help to keep trails open for multiple user groups, how to safely pass horses, mules and llamas on the trail, and much more. No need to bring lunch, Mt. Olympus Chapter BCHW will be serving hot dogs and chili.
Admission is free, and activities for the whole family will be going on throughout the event. Stop in for the whole day, or for an hour or two.
