Neel named rookie ref of the year

Jenn Neel has been named rookie referee of the year by the area’s referees association. Neel started refereeing middle school boys and girls basketball and just this year she moved up to the high school level. At a meeting of the association a few weeks ago Neel received her award which includes a paid trip to referee camp where she will be able to hone her ref skills even more.

Neel is one of two females that ref in this area and she said that the other refs were excited for her and happy to see she had come so far in just her first year. Neel describes refing the games as a joy to do and admits that the fans can become a bit intimidating but she said, "I just get tunnel vision and pay attention to the game."

As far as getting heckled by the crowd Neel added, "You have to have thick skin and remember I can eject them if they get out of hand, I just want the kids to enjoy the game."

As far as the confidence the association has in this new rookie it must be solid as Neel refereed a playoff game Tuesday night between Neah Bay and Tulalip. Neel said "first year rookies don’t usually get playoff games.

"I am excited to give back to the kids."
