When is a door not a door? When it’s ajar. When is a door more than a door? When it’s a labor of love. Then it becomes a coffee table, or a wall hanging, a playhouse door or the top to a vanity. Tactile, simple, stunning, or something to take you away to a favorite spot – the doors submitted from Forks for the Artistic Door Project sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County, fit beautifully into one or more of these categories and you can come and see them for yourself.
Habitat for Humanity will be hosting the Artistic Door Project – Artist Reception and Review from 4-6 p.m. March 9 at the Rainforest Arts Center as part of a Business After Hours event. It’s free to the public. You can come and view the doors, meet the folks who painted those doors, vote for the People’s Choice Awards, plus have some light refreshments and a few laughs with friends and neighbors. You also can figure out how the theme of “25” appears on each door and stake out the door you want to bid on at A Taste of the Peninsula in April.
The doors will be displayed in various storefronts around Forks from March 1-April 10, before making their way to yet another free-to-the-public Artist Reception on April 15 at Sunland in Sequim. This is the first time the entire collection will be seen together. At this point the doors will be judged by someone from the Washington State Arts Council, three first-prize awards will be given and each community’s People’s Choice Awards will be announced.
On April 16 the doors will be auctioned off at A Taste of the Peninsula at Sunland. Much fun to be had there, by the way. Music and dancing and lots of good food and plenty of wine tasting. Plan to come! The money goes to Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County to help buy “real” doors, windows and lumber, so we can build more housing for folks who need it. If you need more information on tickets for the event, or if you or your organization would like to be generous enough to sponsor a table for the event, contact Colleen Robinson at 360-460-5560 or go to www.habitatclallam.org. Meantime, mark March, 9 on your calendar and come help us celebrate our doors.
